4 - Notes
-
4 was my first painting
-
I had purchased 2 white canvases & 4 tubes of oil paint (black, white, red, blue) sometime around 2005
-
the canvases at that time were side stapled instead of back stapled
-
took at least 10 years to gain the courage to try to paint something
-
I had been perplexed for years about my midi studio set-up
-
I tried to configure two-way communication between the sound modules and computer to save and store system exclusive information. This was like taking a snapshot of the state of components used for any particular tune I was composing.
-
and since so many variables changed with each tune, it was essential to be able to recall these settings if I left a tune for a while and returned to finish it at a later date
-
setting up the appropriate flow of data was achieved by correctly wiring and selecting the proper midi routing configurations on two Midi Time Pieces (midi interfaces)
-
unfortunately, sometimes the routing worked properly and sometimes it didn’t. I re-routed and re-wired the midi ports countless times, but never completely solved the problem.
-
I was beyond frustrated & thought that I was losing my mind or that there was something about MIDI that I just didn’t get
-
so, I learned to live with it, and was never able to archive all the pertinent data
-
fast-forward to 2016…
-
I was browsing through some electronic music articles on the internet with the intent of re-kindling my interest in electronic percussion and came across an article that pointed to resolving my unsolved problem
-
it explained that on the Midi Time Piece AV, system exclusive data transfer on port #4 was problematic
-
I was elated that I was not in fact crazy, that my age-old problem had an explanation, and that I could begin to fully utilize the studio simply by assigning a sound module that didn’t require system exclusive information to port #4 – a solution that I had by chance missed in my many attempts to rewire the studio
-
I was also extremely miffed that I had invested so much wasted time in the effort to solve the problem, and that the details of so many tunes had been lost forever
-
it was the combination of these two reactions that provided the impetus to start painting – I thought that words could never express what a painting might
