A collection of four paintings: Susan, D’Arcy, Peter, Brian

Origins:

• Primary color backgrounds – intended to use for 3 variations of John Cage’s Variations II. (See You Are Here)

• My friend Nancy commented that she liked my painting “4”. She urged me to do a painting using her favorite number – 7. Was reminded of the numbers 8 and 9 from Susan Cain’s book “Quiet”. Seemed to be an obvious extension to include Susan (6) and lucky me (7).

• Career confessions

 

Colors:

• Painting color scheme (stall side panels) alludes to a loop of only four bathroom stalls beginning with 6 and ending with 9. I suppose 1-5 and 10-? might be reserved for extraverts…

• Used primary colors for acrylic background washes except Susan, which uses black, white & grey (appropriately plain and neutral)

• Stall dividers are neutral - acrylic grey

• Stall doors are complimentary colors of the primary color background

Trivia:

• Nancy might be interested to note that the pictures are temporarily displayed with a 7” spacing between them

• Had to paint all four paintings at the same time in order to maintain the correct color mixes for all of the stall side panels
